Simply Romance in D

Got to watch the last staging of Rep's Romance in D last Sunday. I knew what to expect. It's not something that can "wow" the audience(like saying wala lang, just for entertainment and my promise to support the theater).

Nothing spectacular (oh maybe except for the set design). Of course, you can only expect good acting from theater veterans. But then again, there's nothing extravagant about the material to actually expect “wow” moments from them. The material is similar to a sitcom (probably longer since it's 1.5 hours). It can make you laugh and think but it's not something you'd want to watch live for a pretty expensive price.

Well, there are notable moments.

1) When Charles (Audie Gemora) was communicating his feelings to his mother through music. It's kind of hard to describe here.

2) The ending (although it was quite lacking of something) it was able to communicate the main point of the play which is the value of communication. When the two main characters (Charles and Isabel played by Ana Bitong) finally admitted their interest/affection to each other, the two agreed to watch a movie and eat dinner together (they were both at Charles's apartment. Charles prepared the dinner while Isabel went back to her unit to get the player well actually prepare her place as she assumed that Charles will be going to her place with the dinner. So the ending, both of them were waiting for each other. See, that's the point of communication. One cannot always assume that the other was able to understand everything.

Makes me wonder how a theater production company decides as to what show to stage. Hmmm... Maybe there should be a survey of some sort to get to know the interests of the audience (target audience). Since we're encouraging more people to watch theater, maybe more interesting materials can be staged. I'm just an exception; I watch anything (I've promised that I'll watch ANY theater show as long as I've the time and money to do so).But it's different to non-regular theater-goers.
