Discontinued benefit; concluded loyalty

Former Meycauayan City Mayor Eduardo Alarilla was charged Friday with plunder at the Office of Ombudsman for allegedly pocketing P80 million from over 200 "ghost projects" during his nine-year term as city mayor.

Yes, he is our former Mayor. And this isn't something that shocked me. I'm waiting for something like this to come out long ago. This should've happened earlier (before people voted for his wife).

The big question: WHY ONLY NOW?

It's all about patronage politics.

The mayor hires loyal followers (who may not be fit for the position). He/she can even create an opening so to have an office for that loyal follower. If that follower finds out that mayor is doing some bad deeds, there are three things that could probably happen:

(1) Join him. Benefit from it. One will just support whatever mayor is doing. Simple, he hired me. Yes, that utang na loob concept.

(2) Feel guilty, quit the job, and keep quiet.

(3) Feel guilty, quit the job, and EXPOSE. (I think this rarely happens, right?)

It seems that the first scenario happened between the Ex-Mayor and the complainants. Probably because of shifted allegiance or damaged loyalty (due to personal misunderstandings), there goes the reason to reveal what was before a common activity among them.

When the benefit is over, that's the time when atrocious acts are exposed. This is usually the case. Sad, but most of revelations about a cruel endeavor of a politician usually happen when a favor is unreturned or a personal connection has been damaged or for political advantage. It's very rare to see an honest outrage.

I think this case filed against Meycauayan's former Mayor is not a result of guilt or concern for truth or for the City. It's simply personal.

Well, I still have to be thankful of the fact that these deeds were exposed. And I just hope something will happen with the case.

********

Officials in the executive have the power to create positions and hire people they think necessary for the office. But something's effing wrong when you find out that your Ex-Mayor works as a consultant for your incumbent mayor who happens to be his wife.
