PLAYS! PLAYS! PLAYS!

Another reason why I might end up broke in the coming months -- Broke but happy! :)

I’m so overwhelmed with the great line-up of different theatre groups for this season. So far, I’ve already watched five (5) plays (with one repeat) for this year. Well, it’s not that much compared with other theatre fanatics but I’m happy that I’m able to satisfy my passion. Play-watching has become part of my life already (well, soon, maybe not just play-watching hehe).
I'm going to watch all of these!!!

PILIPINAS CIRCA 1907

I love TP in terms of staging fearless plays. If you are intellectually and psychologically prepared, you can never go wrong with any TP play.

About the Play

Political conflict and family relations get in the way of two pairs of star-crossed lovers when America was more than in the heart, in a new production of the landmark sarwela set in the period prior to the natioinal elections in 1907.

AVENUE Q - Whose life doesn't suck?

With songs like "It sucks to be me," "What Do You Do with a B.A. in English?", no doubt that a young-adult can definitely relate with the play. Isn't that we often find ourselves feeling that we're "useless" and "lost"? I simply can't wait to sing along!

About the Play

AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbors seem nice. There's Brian the out-of-work comedian and his therapist fiancée Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and his roommate Rod --a Republican investment banker who seems to have some sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the building's superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.) But not all the people on Avenue Q are human and perhaps that explains some of their unusual warmth. No, these non-humans aren't aliens trying to take over the world with their unusually affable behavior. They are puppets – much like you'd see on Sesame Street. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

ART (One Night Only)

Yes, it’s coming to Manila. I think the casts -Jett Pangan, Michael de Mesa and Ricky Davao- are enough reason to watch this play. Woohoo! Jett Pangan in a non-musical stage play!

About the Play

Art is a brilliant comedy about a friendship that is threatened when one member of a barkada does something that upsets another member – in this case, buying a painting that he finds “pretentious.”

Originally written in French and produced by Sean Connery in London, Art has won numerous awards, including the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and the 1997 Olivier Award for Best Comedy, and has been translated into, among others, English, Mandarin, Japanese, German and Spanish. This sparkling new translation by Lito Abaño captures all the humor of the original while adapting its language into an easy, colloquial and thoroughly contemporary Filipino.

Everyone of us is a FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

After watching the movie, I felt the need to read on History. If you're after learning more about tradition, culture, and history, watch Fiddler on the Roof. Oh, and don't forget how many times Teyve mentioned "on the other hand."

About the Play

In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.

Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler On The Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. It's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.

The show features a star turn in Tevye, among the most memorable roles in musical theatre.. Its celebrated score by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, features songs loved the world over: "Sunrise, Sunset," "If I Were A Rich Man" and "Matchmaker," to name a few. Fiddler On The Roof is simply Broadway at its very best.
