DOWNtown

(via Walk This Way, articles on Mayor Lim 1 & 2 )

I'm not a Manilenyo but I'm one of those who appreciate the beauty of Manila (amidst the pollution). When I used to work in Makati, I would normally pass by Roxas Boulevard. The view of Manila bay, the onlookers, the joggers, etc. gave me some feeling of calmness (and a bit of of frustration due to the apparent pollution) . I must admit that the development (beautification) of Baywalk through the efforts of ex-Mayor Atienza made it look eye-catching and interesting to visit.

But its seems that Mayor Lim is treating everything in Manila like criminals (Remember those times when he used to spray paint on houses of drug pushers)

I don't normally go to baywalk as I prefer staying at Harbor View. Yes, it's too noisy. But there are more acceptable reasons why it's not necessary to remove the establishments there.

1. Economic Opportunity (Do I need to say more?)

2. Less-Scary and Lively Manila at Night

Manila isn't Diliman but I feel a bit scary whenever I'm in Manila way past 10 pm. Unlike if you're in Makati, Ortigas, or QC, there's a certain unexplainable "security" of sorts. Maybe because contrary to the places mentioned above, quite few people actually roam within the City. And with the removal of these establishments along Baywalk, it'll be more scary to stay in Manila late night. (so lalo na kong hindi magpapagabi panonood sa CCP, wala ng tao sa kalsada maliban sa mga Malate peeps)

3. There's such a thing as "regulation" (as pointed out in Celdran's blog).

If the only problem is the "noise" caused by the tons of bands playing along Baywalk, the local government can set rules.

"Manila, Manila
I keep coming back to Manila
Simply no place like Manila
Manila, I'm coming home"

He's just undoing what Atienza did.

I don't like Atienza but I like Baywalk, or at least the idea of it. Lim can fine-tune but removing it totally will not help.

Ironically, Lim paved the way by cleaning up Malate. Atienza just made it a wee bit better. Lim apparently wants to bring it back to the days post-red light district but pre gimmick era.

I hope he changes his mind. If there's one good thing Atienza did for Manila, well that's probably the development of Baywalk. Wala naman sigurong masama kung "irerespeto niya" kung anuman iyong mabuting nagawa nung nauna sa kanya. Hay politics.

Parang walang katorya-torya ang Maynila kung magiging ganun for the rest of his term.
