Professionalism

One of the apparent problems in our society that hurdles growth is the lack of professionalism in the government and even in private corporations.

Most Filipinos tend to be personal on any endeavor we have. Even at work, most of us would be very personal -- with our relationship with our co-workers, with our working habits, with transactions that are work-related.

Like for example, if we are working on a project at the office in a team, it could be expected that there are differences in approaches and stance on planning and even implementing the project. Various ideas/opinions would be helpful in establishing a good project. But of course, because of these differences, friction among team members could be unavoidable.

Well, there's nothing wrong about friction within the office or team. It could actually be helpful in improving each employee's work. Yet, the conflict in an office becomes unhealthy if it has transcended beyond work -- making misunderstanding personal.

Been there... Done that...

With my short working stint (3 years), one of the essential lessons I've learned is learning not to make work-related misunderstanding a personal issue. It's unhealthy and unwise. It only pains your soul and drains your energy. Not only that, it also pains the company or the organization you belong.

It’s inevitable to hurt other people or get hurt at work. However, learning how not to transcend the hurt into a personal level is the best thing to do.

I guess that’s the thing that the people in the government lack. Considering that most of government officials and politicians are already greedy of positions, they are also too personal about their political transactions. Or they could also be too political in their personal transactions. Either way, most of the politicians aren’t professional. Thus, they only contribute to the deteriorating sytem we have.
