Catalyzed by Survivor, Amazing Race, American Idol, a lot of reality shows have been conquered the Philippine Television. It has adopted this kind of trend in the industry - from reality TV quiz games to star search to adventure challenges. Completing the entire week, with different time slots, the viewers are overwhelmed with these reality shows. Just like the soap opera fever, reality shows are almost everywhere. Now, Pinoy viewers have the reality TV habit aside from the soap opera tradition they have in their homes. Before, news will be routinely followed by soap operas. But now, there’s a substantial adaptation in the primetime viewing of local networks.
NEWS à REALITY SHOWS à SOAP OPERA.
Well, the Filipino viewers seem to have embraced this change. No wonder, the two Big Local Networks are currently combating against each other through their reality show releases. But then again, are these Reality TV shows honest? I mean are they really real in the deepest sense of the word?
Of course, these shows have scriptwriters. One might think that they are just responsible for scripting to create a flow in their show. However, it seems that the scripts weren’t just used for guide. Rather, the whole thing that concerns the ‘reality TV show’ is just in the script. This is strongly exemplified by “VICTIM EXTREME”. This show does not convince me at all. A thinking and feeling being would know or would have a hint if he/she is being fooled. Considering the plot of the incidents that have occurred, one might think that someone is playing around with him or her. I find it so denigrating to the artists. They allow themselves to look stupid on the screen while their viewers are laughing at them. It would be more foolish if my assumption is true. Allowing someone to make you stupid is even more ridiculous.
Last. Saturday I serendipitously watched “Pirated CD” (hosted by Vhong Navarro). Oops! It’s another reality TV show. They tend to change the image and personality of an artist into some ordinary being. Like, they make Angelica de la Cruz a “fan” watching MTB. She was dressed differently. Prosthetics and magical make-up were applied in her face to make her look like a “common province girl” (to quote the description of the stylist). However, make-up and prosthetics in her face didn’t make her look ordinary. She became extremely extra-ordinary. With a bulging nose, unusually dark skin, and unusually big mole on the face, her looks attracted more attention. Considering that her face caught attention, a look in her eyes would definitely divulge her real identity. I really doubt if the artists she approached did not know who she was.
This kind of show has affected the media culture of the Filipinos. It entertains the Filipinos while they are again being fooled.
I’m still not persuaded that Reality TV Shows are Really Real…
