Astonished with the Revenge

Posted at 01:29 pm, 03 Nov 2003

A fire outbreak in Pasay last October 20 left 1500 families homeless. This is an ultimate misfortune for the victims. Imagine the fact that these people were just squatting in that place, abruptly, lost their homes. They don’t even know where to get money for their everyday expenses, now, the other question will be: “Where will they reside?” Having no place to rest, these people then spread their cartons along the MRT station, in the EDSA overpass, and under the EDSA flyover. Alas, these people are just dependent on the help that the government and NGOs could give them.

I’ve read the news about this fire outbreak from the Inquirer. Through that, I’ve learned the cause of the fire outbreak. I was really startled of the reason for this enormous tragedy. A couple quarreling was the tool to this disaster. The wife threw a gas lamp against her husband. Accidentally, it bumped into the gas tank. In an instant, a fire burst. A selfish fight caused jeopardy to thousands of people.

One man told us the story of the couple that caused the fire. If it was a miserable start for the victims, it was a tragic end for the couple. The pain that the victims feel have been altered to anger. They took revenge against the cause of their quandary. According to the man, the couple was killed. “Pinagsasaksak ang mag-asawa. Tapos ayun tinapon na lang din ata doon sa nasusunog na lugar. Para wala ng problema. Di bale na kasing manakawan ka ng 10 beses kay sa masunugan ka. Di mo rin masisi yung mga biktima eh.” I was really astonished with that story. I couldn’t help but envision the scenario wherein the couple was being killed. The story is not yet proven. Though, it is really shocking.

The pain the victims experience is precisely tremendous. The alleged revenge they did shows the anger within them. I can’t blame these people if the allegation is true. But still, I am astonished and I can’t get over it.
