I've been a bad fan. I only learned about John Mayer's latest single yesterday (salamat at nakinig ako sa NU).
"Say" is part of "The Bucket List" OST (MOVIE: This movie seems interesting: death, living life to the fullest, friendship, regrets. And yes, I cried when I watched the music video). The song is something you wouldn't easily associate with John Mayer except of course when you hear his voice. The instrumentation is much more similar to the approach of Binocular in "Deep." (Observe the intro; but hey I'm no expert here.) It's MORE soulful compared to his previous tracks, I think (like flowing water).
As for the lyrics, Mayer writes good songs. The song is beautifully written except for that too much repetition of "Say what you need to say" (8 times). But maybe the idea really is to push listeners to, well, say whatever it is that they need to say.
Oh, I just love John Mayer.

Some things are better left unsaid. But there are more things that MUST be expressed.
We keep things to ourselves to avoid hurting someone or probably to keep us from pain. We try to stay away from saying what we think and how we feel as fear always confronts us. In lack of courage, we're even more imprisoned in a depressing and helpless situation. We should find COURAGE from our REASON for speaking up. Else, we live a life full of regrets.
Meanwhile, there's a need to differentiate between what we WANT to say from what we NEED to say. Not all wants are needed but all that is needed is wanted. There can be another day to speak of things that we WANT to say until they become "a need to say" (perfect timing so to speak). But there's only today to speak of the things that we MUST say.
And that I guess is something that can make anyone feel free. Don't you just love it when you are nearing to that point of liberation because you started to speak up? Woohoo!
