Participants to the Theater Talk ATBP with Floy Quintos received a very priceless souvenir – a CD Sampler of Philippine Musical Theater. It features songs from the local productions of various musicals all (except ZZZ) of which I wasn’t able to watch (KATY!, Miong, Rama at Sita, Larawan, Alikabok, etc.). Listening to the songs made me feel proud about being a Filipino. We have great artists and singers – priceless talents.
Because we have priceless Filipino talents (especially in the field of music and theater), there’s a need to continue encouraging the people to invest a bit of their time in viewing these shows. I think one probable way of promoting the Philippine Musical Theater is coming up with recordings of the productions.
Given that not everyone is into buying originals these days, maybe production companies can offer something like free downloads for the main songs of the show. It’s also possible to simply come up with a website devoted to the show where people can listen (not necessarily download) to some of the songs (for teaser purposes). With the advent of technological-advancement, we should be able to utilize the different technologies available in order to increase awareness and interest of Filipinos in theater.
Personally, one thing that makes me interested to watch a musical is my exposure to its music prior the show. You can already develop a certain desire to see the show once you’ve heard the songs (well, of course if they are good). I believe this will be more helpful for original Filipino musical plays.
