It pays to lurk

I’d like to believe that aside from being oversensitive, another attitude that makes simple things complicated (and need not be an issue at all) is the idea that a lot of us are afraid of admitting that we don't understand the thing. We fret that if we ask questions, we will already be labeled as dumb. You know, it’s better to learn more about something we don’t understand before actually commenting and giving our position of a certain issue.

This is probably one of the reasons why things like “Desperate Housewives’ Philippine Med School Thingy” and “ The Cory Slut” have become BIG ISSUES. Those who are uncertain about the context of jokes still had the courage to raise opinions even without understanding things. We can never make a stand for something we don’t understand, right?

Say for instance, those who have been forwarding the petition up until now apparently do not think (the fact that they have forwarded the opinion is a confirmation of their support) and are just simply forwarding the mail because it says there ‘please pass.’ Man, it’s already October 6 and for your information people, the main goal of the petition – public apology, has been granted already (that was last Thursday I think).

Now that Cory thing. There’s nothing wrong in asking other people of the premise of the show if you’re not familiar with it. Or at least, you could access the Internet as it is full of available resources for you to understand what “The Daily Show” is all about. It’s given that not everyone who’ve reacted about the clip are followers or at least have watched the show more than twice. Most have just accessed the clip through forwarded message or have just heard the issue from the news. (FYI, I’m not familiar with the show. But at least I’ve some understanding of what Satire is.)

I’d rather be a lurker – trying to understand what the fuzz is about. It pays to read other people’s opinion (from both sides) to be enlightened. The point is, if you’re UNCERTAIN or you DON’T UNDERSTAND what the thing is all about, admit it and learn. Probably, you can 'delurk' after.

Satire is difficult enough to appreciate fully, much less write. Which is why Stewart and Colbert are always nominated for awards.

Yang Cory thing na yan kasalanan ng ABS-CBN eh. Deedee Sytangco obviously does not watch TDS (or YouTube), so who could've called her attention to a throwaway graphic in a piece that pokes fun at those who think that women can't lead countries?

Oh well. Yung lecheng "Inday Jokes" lang ata ang kumakagat sa marami.

P.S. Sabi ko nga, I was never exposed to Western Shows (only to Jologs TV) kaya I'm not familiar with "Family Guy" and even George Carlin (though I've heard of them). Poor me, I need to have MORE TIME to know all these good shows and actors.

But the problem is (as you stated in the post) that people who aren't exposed to these types of shows are the ones complaining. They're taken way out of context.

O'Reilly and the other guys these shows constantly parody just react by saying "who watches cable anyway?" Minamaliit lang sila. Tayo naman, kabaligtaran, pinapalaki natin.

Oo nga naman. If such apology will happen, for sure there'll be negative reactions, too (papalakihin din). And for sure, Kris will react. Oh, I don't want to see her crying on TV. Not again.

It is better to be silent and be suspected of ignorance than to speak up and remove all doubt.
