August to September is an awaited period for book lovers – bookstores season sale period. Powerbooks and National Bookstore are both on sale plus the International Book Fair is set on last week of August to September 2.
It’s given that you’ll find good selections at good price during this period. However, there’s a bit of strategizing needed to maximize the opportunity and of course your money.
Visit Different Branches for Wider Selections
Remember that each branch has different markets. Hence, each National Bookstore branch offer different sets of book. Don’t limit yourself into just an outlet. I’ve been to three branches of National (within the sale period) and a branch of Powerbooks. At National Robinson’s Galleria, you’ll find Marquez’s works (e.g. Chronicles of a Death Foretold) at less than 200 pesos and other notable books (SF, Self-Help, etc.).
But of course, nothing will beat National Bookstore’s main branch. My oh my. If you have the money now, it should be your first stop. But if you’re still a bit budget-tight like me, we can have it as a final destination (I've actually controlled myself not to drop by the main branch though I was in the area). I need to load up lots of bullets before launching my search and target operations there. Kung paisa-isa or dalawang books lang, mall outlets will do.
Visit Different Branches for Price Comparison
Got a copy of “Elektra” (novel) at P35 at National Bookstore SM Marilao. When I was digging the books at National Robinson’s Galleria yesterday afternoon, I chanced upon the same copy of “Elektra” priced at around P100 (already at 65% off). Obviously, price varies in each branch. Again, I think it has still something to do with the kind of market.
Bargain Books not just on Anniversary Sale
Meanwhile, even if the stores aren’t on a big sale, once in a while, they will have bargain corners. Just be patient in searching. There’s always a good find in those tons of bargain books – good read in perfect condition .
Happy Digging! Enjoy reading!

I also recommend second-hand books. If you have patience, you could find hard-to-find books (Read: Abelard's Historia Calamitatum, Augustine's Confessions, Moliere, Rushdie's Satanic Verses, etc.) at very low prices
^True. I've been to Book for Less in Alabang they've got good collection, too. But quite pricey na rin. a second hand book for P180 parang mahal na rin. Book Sale, basta karirin meron din
I've an e-book copy of(illegal of course) Rushdie's Satanic Verses.
BTW, Check LibraryThing.com if you haven't.
