Looking at most Christian (devout) families I know, they consider prayer as the ultimate source of unity in the family. Going to church together and praying together at home seem to be among the best forms of creating trusting and lasting relationships in a family.
I've read several books about relationship with God and Family (because of a previous project) but I wasn't really convinced that the only way for a family to be united (and grow stronger) can only be done through prayer and worship of God. Maybe this is because of my alread biased perspective of "God" and Religion. However, limiting a person's perspective on a "united family" can possibly cause damage to the family along the way.
Through time, each member of the family may realize and believe in another perspective. One may remain a devout Christian while another may choose not to have a religion (or even become an agnostic or atheist). Therefore, if the unity and trust within the family are just depending on the notion that prayer (and belief in God), there's greater chances that there'll be slight misunderstanding that might lead to shaky relationship among family members.
We must not forget that there are other means by which we can unite the family. There are a lot of activities that a family can venture. These activities will enable us to create a united family and have lasting and trusting relationship among the members of the family. We can bond with our family through movies, reading books, sharing perspectives about different things, issue discussions, sharing of funny and shallow experiences, outreach, and the list goes on. Building a good family relationship (and good people in the family) doesn't just depend on religious beliefs.
P.S.
I think this is something that my parents (and other parents too) have yet to realize (which I doubt if they'd still realize this).
