VFA Issues

When asked how a similar Smith-Nicole case can be avoided once Balikatan Exercises are resumed, Sec. Gonzales's response is simply foul (parati namang). He said, "Pagsabihan natin ang ating mga kababaihan na umiwas sa Amerikano."

My blood really boiled. I'm not that feminist but anyone (sane and sensitive) could understand my reaction. What he said degrades the Filipino women. It was like assuming, ah, accusing rather, that Filipino women are innately hookers and flirts. Yes, he has the right to express his opinions. But to degrade Filipino women over American Soldiers (and possible abuses from them) is another thing. The incident simply shows that he's a person who doesn't deserve any respect at all. Honestly, ang sarap putulin ng dila ni Sec. Gonzales.

Meanwhile, I've been reading about VFA and different write-ups on Smith Case (esp. the transfer of custody to US Embassy). The case reminds me of my former professors at DLSU. I believe that they are among those people who could provide extensive explanations on the legal issues, bilateral agreements/foreign relations issues, and other issues that may be related to VFA and the Smith-Nicole Case. And as expected, my professors were the one interviewed for GMA 7's news. The great Dr. Robles, Dr. De Castro, and I think even Prof. Manhit were interviewed to provide their viewpoints of the case (I think Atty. Gascon and Prof. Briones could also provide good analysis of the issue). But still, the interviews were too short for everyone to understand the case (including me).

Tonight (Jan 9, 06), Reporter's Notebook will be featuring the VFA-Smith Issue.

He insulted Americans, too, by branding all of them as potential rapists.

^ That I missed. His comments are most of the time foul.
